Flight Superintendent

Jun 1995 - Apr 1997

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, Erlanger, KY
Flight Superintendent / Aircraft Dispatcher responsible for the safe, efficient and economic flight planning for DHL Airway's Part 121 flight schedule. I was required to maintain a high service level to our internal and external customers and maintain the operational integrity of the airline with a flight schedule that is different for each day (based on a 7 day rotation) coupled with scarce and tightly controlled resources including aircraft, crew, maintenance routings, airport facilities, meeting all DOT, FAA and TSA requirements, as with as the dynamic environment of operational disruptions, whether they be air traffic control related, weather, or mechanical issues with the aircraft. It’s a marriage of compromises that requires constant attention. I analyzed and evaluated meteorological information to determine potential hazards to safety of flight and to select the most desirable and economic route of flight. I computed the amount of fuel required according to type of aircraft, distance of flight, maintenance limitations, weather conditions, and minimum fuel requirements. I prepared flight plans containing information such as maximum takeoff and landing weights, weather reports, field conditions, NOTAMS and many other informational components required for the completion of flight. I prepared and signed the dispatch release which is the legal document providing authorization for a flight to depart. I delayed or canceled flights if unsafe conditions threaten the safety of his crew, passengers or aircraft. I monitored weather conditions, aircraft position reports, and aeronautical navigation charts to evaluate the progress of the flight. I updated the pilot in command of significant changes to weather or flight plan and recommended flight plan alternates, such as changing course, altitude and, if required, enroute landings in the interest of safety and economy. I disseminated flight information to the company including stations and reservations.
