Guided the Southern Tile Contractors Association, a small regional group, to the present day National Tile Contractors Association with world wide affiliations. Almost defunct and with no property or assets except a small amount of cash I began building the association, with the help of long time association employee, Myra Cardwell, into an organization of prominence. The industry was small and apathetic with a relatively large number of small manufacturers, most specializing in small size white bodied wall tile and limited ceramic mosaics. We successfully expanded the size, scope and participation in the association trade show and improved TileLetter from a rag sheet into a respectable and reputable industry magazine. During the first eight years of my tenure, through careful and frugal methods and working out of my home, we bought land and built the existing association building. The land, building and contents were completely paid for, no debt or mortgage of any kind and a respectable amount of money in the bank. Continued growth of the trade show, vastly expanded revenue from TileLetter advertising and increased membership permitted expanded membership services. The association workshop program was launched in 1985 along with revitalization of the Technical Committee. A combination of the efforts of these programs led to the creation of one of the industries most recognized and used publications - the NTCA Reference Manual. NTCA was the industry's largest trade show for 39 years prior to mergers that created what we know today as Coverings. NTCA's growth closely parallels the industry growth over the past 40 years. It's contributions to training, education, publications, trade shows, industry unity efforts and dedicated staff is now known world wide.
