Mentored by a group of the most preeminent ophthalmologist of our day, my Chairman was Jackson Coleman, a pioneer in ocular ultrasound and its use to determine malignancy of tumors. He was a great teacher of the art of medicine and compassion for the patient. Robert Ellsworth, David Abramson, and Barrett Haik ran this country's busiest pediatric retinoblastoma clinic. Dr. Abramson later assumed leadership of the clinic and became the worlds authority on ocular malignancy and follow on tumors. Dr. Robert Ellsworth was the protagonist who vigorously insisted that radiation of ocular melanomas was equally effective to the more traumatic enucleation while many experts insisted that his method would result in many more deaths. After fifteen years of studies the results vindicated his position, without enucleation there was no increase in mortality. Dr. Haik became Proffesor of Ophthalmology at the University of Tennessee Medical school and Chairman of Ophthalmology . Dr. Jackobiec was our ocular pathologist, a prolific writer and teacher, later Chairman of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. My resident adviser, great friend and teacher, one of the best retinal surgeons in the world Dr. Stanley Chang became Chairman of Ophthalmology at Columbia / Presbyterian. Most of my training in retinal surgery was under a pioneer in retinal surgery, Dr. Harvey Linkoff, whose techniques survive today over those of earliest fame.. He was amazingly creative and a brilliant teacher.
