My role with Bravehearts as the Child and Family Advocate, was a role I continue to be very passionate about. I have gained a broad knowledge of community organisations and worked closely within the community sector to improve outcomes for families and children affected by child sexual abuse. In this role I was able to provide therapeutic support as well as information and education on legal pathways and processes involved when reporting child sexual abuse.

I have worked in the capacity of Probation and Parole Officer for Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) which involved recording information relevant to a client’s community-based correctional order. Great attention to detail was integral to the provision of relevant and timely information to the courts. Tasks also included answering and directing phone calls, maintaining client records/case files, spreadsheet data entry, compiling reports and liaising with key stakeholders. This role also entailed assessing individuals on community based orders for risk and responsivity factors. This role involved the use of supportive counselling and motivational interviewing with a compliance focus to provide guidance to offenders on court orders. My employment in this service provided valuable experience in case management and the ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders including clients, the family of clients and other community organizations.

I gained experience with working with young people in this time by using a person-centred approach and assisted them to participate in activities including leisure, personal care and household management. In my experience at this facility, where I worked together as a team with other youth workers to provide a safe and caring environment for children at risk, I developed the ability to engage with these young people in a respectful, positive and supportive way. I am able to present messages clearly and concisely by explaining information using language appropriate for the audience.
