    As Senior Safety Advisor I have written a series of safety policies and coordinated strategic safety outcomes across the organisation. I established late night safety audit practice using multi agency teams to evaluate and improve the experience in entertainment precincts. More recently this has included evaluating the public realm from a gendered perspective to enhance city activation. I provided strategic safety advice, problem solved issues in the public realm and worked in collaboration with police to achieve real time crime prevention outcomes for the city.

    This role requires a clear understanding of the crime statistics, perceptions of safety and the range of factors that impact on City safety by day and by night. This information was not available when I came to Council and has been developed through my networking abilities with key partnership agencies including SA Police, Office of the Liquor and Gambling Commissioner and to a lesser extent the Attorney General’s Department. Another key evidence base or data source is the ongoing series of City late night audits focussing on entertainment precincts which I established. This evidence base has been used to justify the need for safety projects and policy development in the areas of safer dispersal, liquor licensing, management of the public realm and development planning for the City.

    As manager of the Heroin Overdose and Aboriginal People Project I undertook ongoing consultation throughout South Australia with Aboriginal communities, Aboriginal health workers who work with heroin users and Aboriginal heroin users. This consultation process led to the development of a range of effective strategies to address heroin overdose.

    To provide a crime prevention project based consultancy to two Local Governments through the SA Attorney General’s Department:• Development of a multi faceted approach to the reduction of break and enter crime leading to a 74% reduction in this crime type in a segment of Bedford Park in the City of Mitcham.• Development of a series of Retail crime prevention Fact Sheets for all retailers in the Cities of Mitcham and Unley.• Development of a graffiti Crime Prevention Program addressing the motivation of graffiti offenders, evaluation, early intervention with offenders, rapid removal of graffiti, data collection, the use of murals to deter graffiti tagging and a cross council approach to graffiti management.• Strategies to address motor vehicle crime including incentive programs to encourage installation of immobilisers in crime hot spots. • Conducting a community safety plan incorporating community crime prevention needs (as assessed through a survey) and police priorities (as determined through police crime data).

    To provide planning, research and evaluation advice to the Police Strategic Development Branch including corporate planning, evaluation and supervision of a team of planning staff. During this time I also held the position of Acting Manager for six months. In this role I managed the research and personnel management of two teams of research staff.
