Psychology Intern at Cognitive and Language Development Lab via SIP program
-
Jun 2022 - Sep 2022
Spend eight weeks as a research assistant to Dr.Elizabeth Goldman, a Postdoctoral Researcher at Concordia University and Santa Cruze that works in the Cognitive & Language Development Lab via the Science Internship Program. Rated as the most active and passionate lab member in the group.Worked on a currently developing project that focuses on the perception of children on the nature of robots, specifically their naive biology of robots and the factors that affect that perception. Produced significant results that indicated that robots' contingency (socially appropriate behaviour) increased children's perception that they are alive. Further results suggest that for children, different features of aliveness are heavily related to one another. A fully-fledged member of the lab, which included various tasks from the small yet exciting to the mundane yet crucial. Qualitative task includes:- Advertising to and emailing potential participants- Filing participant's data- Trim video for transcription - Transcription of Researcher-Children Interview using Otter.ai- Interpretation of Transcription and transformation into numerical data- Scheduled and sent out surveys for experimentsQuantitative tasks include: - Cleaning large data set for statistical analysis - Using Datavu to analyze visible behaviour - Using JASP to conduct the statistical test, including: independent variable t-test with p-value via different variables, descriptive statistics with partial out variable, multi-variable correlation with partial out variable, a correlational heat map and significant person's r.- Interpreting statistically significant in the context of the researchLearned about: - Ethics of human subject research through CITI - Data security and privacy- Fundamental of Children's naive theories about t the world - Naive Biology zoom studies - Culture differences in children's preschool- Naturalistic Observation techniqueue - Experiment design for children

Independent Researcher writing a proposal studying robot, self-regulation, and children
-
Jun 2022 - Sep 2022
While working under Dr.Goldman, I Independently requested, worked on, and completed a professional research proposal as part of my personal project that investigated how the perception of 'aliveness' in robots from children affected the robot's effectiveness in its self-regulation intervention. It is inspired by Dr.Goldman's work but taken into a practical realm in conjunction with my passion for self-regulation research. In the process, I conducted a literary review on over 100+ sources [linked below] and wrote over 6000 words. Dr.Goldman, upon request, supervised the project and also provided feedback on the draft. The current work is a very rough draft, although an updated draft will be written. The final version will be available before October. I thank Dr.Goldman for supporting me with this research proposal.Abstract (in bullet point form):- Investigate the relationship between children’s perceived animacy of a robot and the robot’s effectiveness in a self-regulation intervention - Relevant background literature in animacy, self-regulation, and children robot interaction are discussed - Four groups are created with four different robots (Dash, Misty, Darwin, Nao) with theoretical difference in animacy from lowest to highest, which to account for possible error an animacy questionnaire was adapted to get a numerical score of children’s perceived animacy of the robot - Self-regulation is measured using Conners’ Kiddie Continuous Performance Test Predicted result is (1) there will be significant difference in the self-regulation between all robot who are two ranking apart (2) the self-regulation from lowest to highest will follow the order of Dash, Misty, Darwin, Nao (3) Increases in perceived animacy will increase self-regulation (4) Perceived animacy will be a significant predictor self-regulation

Student researcher in the Science Internship Program
-
May 2022 - Aug 2022
Science Internship Program (SIP) is a 10-week high school research program that "provides motivated, advanced students with a unique opportunity to work and learn at a premier research institution."As an intern, I experienced everything below and more. Working 40 hours per week for 10 weeks has filled me with experience and excitement for the future. My experience this summer, rather than absolute joy or hard work, has been an authentic mix of both: the late-night transcription of children babbling, the seemingly never-ending literature review, and the sheer satisfaction of getting a p-value <.001 are all experiences of psychology that I have wanted to undergo for so long. Other than what is learned as an intern in the lab, I also was taught by professionals in various Academic workshops. These include conducting preliminary research, giving an effective presentation at scientific conferences, and writing academic/technical papers. But also being exposed to various lectures, laboratories, and pathways opportunities. Although no reports are given, I believe that this experience will mean much more than any other program. It isn't any program whose focus is on helping the student to create a profile. Instead, it is seriously genuine. From site: During the program, UCSC faculty and researchers provide one-on-one mentoring as the interns work on REAL and existing research projects that are worked on by researchers. This means that students experience authentic research that may fail or succeed and includes difficult, tedious, and often insignificant results. Interns truly assist professionals that will advance their research and will learn whatever they are required. Including but not limited to "reading professional journal articles, writing code for scientific computing, gaining practical experience and skills in a lab, and presenting scientific concepts orally and in writing." Culminates in a symposium where interns present their research in 15 minutes.
