I really like Puppet. It's software I use every day. It powers my personal OS and I used it to transform the IT platform at UMD starting almost a decade ago. Puppet is a very beautiful and expressive programming language and automation tool for sysadmins like me. Now I get to take everything I know about it, learn even more, and help Puppet's customers to be just as successful with it as I have been.

My time as a Terp can be divided roughly in half, starting out supporting the Evergreen HPC cluster for PNNL researchers, then transitioning to central IT engineering where I led modernization efforts and delivered the critical Red Hat, Puppet, and GitLab automation to make our migration to AWS successful. My solutions were informed by my experience in the open source community and consistently brought value to the organization by advancing the state of the art without incurring additional license costs.

As a Colonial in my first taste of central IT, I quickly rose from junior to senior admin pioneering new technologies and providing quality support for ERP systems, culminating in enough social capital to drive a migration from Solaris to RHEL 6 and foster a culture of automation with Puppet. All this while successfully juggling the demands of an evening master's program.

In the computer science department's independent IT group, I developed customer relationship skills providing face-to-face support to professors and other VIPs while working on the backend to improve their experience, often by automating their problems away. I took on increasing responsibility managing high profile services while balancing undergraduate life as a Retriever.
