The Elbert County Historical Society began saving the old Armory Auditorium February 23rd, 2003. It has the potential to be a Conference Center, Welcome Center, and National Guard Transportation Museum. We have raised 1.75 million dollars to preserve, protect, and rebuild the Armory. Presently, we are in our last phase II and III. We have replaced the two roofs of the Armory, windows, and did a lot of demolition and asbestos, and now are refinishing the lobby, the lounge, the catering kitchen, main auditorium floor, and preparing the stage with AC and Heat. Utilities have been replaced. After construction has finished in Sept. 2012, we anticipate beginning work on the museum.UPDATE: The Armory has opened ...now it is called the "Rock Gym" since we have a new armory where the National Guard 214th CA unit meets. We ran out of funds after 1.91 million dollars and neither the Elbert County Govt. nor the Historical Society has the capacity to continue further to install the museum. The County now uses the facility as a Town Hall meet facility, Community Play Series which they contract annually. Plays like "Nancy Hart" is being produced next two weeks. Visit www.savannahriverproductions.org for their schedule. The new auditorium, the refurbished stage and curtains, the elevator for the handicapped, the new lobby, restrooms, and furnished kitchen makes the auditorium inviting. Controlled temperature all year round. Very comfortable and nice.Larry Wilson
