    I love magic; both watching and performing. I have been performing on a part time professional basis for about 10 years and before that for friends and family for about 15 years. I have also developed an after dinner lecture/demonstration on the History of Magic and Magicians. The lecture covers magic from the times of the early Egyptians to the Modern era. This is suitable for groups, clubs and societies and is a mixture of information and entertainment. My performing specialities are close-up; cabaret and small stage.

    When I returned from Saudi Arabia I took up a position managing the administration of self-employed contractors to a major aircraft manufacturer in the South West. It was a very interesting position and one in which I gained valuable experience.

    During my time in Saudi Arabia I travelled widely across the country in my role as the surveyor for the Technical Department which managed tactical radar installations. The country is beautiful and the people are very hospitable and always welcoming. It is a vast country with all of the problems associated with a large desert and very dry climate.

    During this time I was between overseas contracts as a Professional Land Surveyor. My contract had ended with the National Survey Authority in Oman and I was looking for another position either in the UK or overseas.

    I was one of 6 professional Land surveyors working with Omani surveyors and technicians based in Muscat. During my time in Oman my major project was to deliver a 13 month survey of Dhofar. This is about the size of Wales and the project's aim was to fix the position of 3 survey points in each of 800 villages in the region. The ground covered difficult terrain from large areas of desert and mountains to the fertile coastal plain around Salalah.

    I retired from the Army in mid-1990 and immediately started work for an old friend of mine, Ken Hall in Taunton. Unfortunately this was a difficult time just as the first recession started. Nevertheless we managed to gain quite a few contracts and during my short time with Ken I gained an awful lot of commercial experience and had a wonderful time surveying all parts of the South West. Notable contacts were a gas-pipe line as laid survey and a levels survey for the [then] National Rivers Authority. I left Ken to take up the position in Oman.

    I joined the Army as an apprentice and left as a Captain 28 years later. I was privileged to serve in Borneo, Malaya, Singapore, Thailand, Germany, United Arab Emirates, United States of America, and Canada as well as many locations throughout England. I had a marvellous time and managed to avoid anything dangerous! During my last two years I undertook a self-directed study course and night school to improve my mathematics to "A" Level and then to qualify as Professional Land Surveyor with the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.
