    • Lt Col (Ret.)
      • Dec 1953 - Jan 1974

I was Commissioned a 2nd Lt. Through the ROTC program and xcalled to active duty in December 1953. I attended primary flight training at Columbus AFB MS and basic at Edind AFB OK. I received my wings on December 3, 1954 and was assigned to the 1501st Air Transport Wing at Travis AFB CA. where I was assigned as a C-97 co-pilotwith the 75th Air Transport Squadron (ATS). In 1956 after attending C-97 HTTU at Palm beach AFB FL I was transfered to the 47th ATS at Hickham AFB HI. Shortly after arriving at Hickham, the 47th was re-deployed to Travis AFB CA and those of us who had recently arrived were transfered to the C-124 program. I was assigned to the 48th ATS and returned to Palm Beach to arrend C-124 training. I flew a heavy schedule of flights around the Pacific area and as I gained experience I was up-graded to Aircraft Commander. I still think being a 1st Lt Aircraft Commander of a heacy transport was the best and most responsible job I have ever held. From Hawaii I was assigend to Hill AFB UT flying with the 28th Logistic Support Squadron. The unit specialized in moving weapons and it was an interseting job and involved flying to many world wide destinations. At Hill I beame an Instructor Pilot, overseeing the training of new pilots in the unit and started working as an operations officer scheduling our operations. I was promoted to Captain on January 1, 1960. Hill was a happy assignment and we hated to see it end, but in the fall of 1963 we were assignd to Tachikawa Japan and the 1503 ATW, where I initally flew with the 22nd Troop Carrier Squadron (C-124). Shortly after our arrival, the wing was reduced to Group status and I went to work as an operations officer in th Airlift Command Post. I continued to fly as an attached pilot with the 22nd TCS.
