Time spans many years with ever increasing engineering and management responsibilities. As a young engineer in the Radio Lab., I was member of the team (with our Huntsville Electronics Division) that designed and production launched Chrysler's first all-electronic digital radio. Designed and built automated vehicle Antenna Test Range at Proving Grounds. I and my staff developed functional in-windshield and in-body antennas for AM, FM, CB using wire and planar antenna designs. Engineered ignition noise suppression systems for metal and fiberglass-bodied vehicles. Conducted EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) compliance and certification tests to SAE and CISPR standards. Assisted US Army Tank Command in developing improved and cost-effective military vehicle EMI suppression systems for their Chrysler vehicles. Was responsible for EMI vehicle certification tests. Researched early GPS systems with adaptations from avionics and supported the move to present-day higher accuracy systems (previously only military) for civilian use. Researched and applications developed early voice recognition systems to control in-vehicle 'high attention' systems. Developed durability tests and investigated LED and LCD technologies for fixed and programmable vehicle instrument panel and 'heads up' displays. Worked on early vehicle wiring multiplex concepts and prototypes. Provided quarterly research updates and recommendations to then CEO Lee Iaccoca and staff. Development of more robust multiplex wiring, body computers, collision avoidance, millimeter wave, ultrasonic technologies ultimately led into the then IVHS (Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems), later renamed ITS work.
