Experience

    • writer & researcher
      • Jul 2004 - Present
      • Australia, Vietnam

After taking early retirement, I lived in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) Vietnam, for 14 years. My time in SGN yielded 9 published books. Vastly more productive than my underwhelming academic career which yielded 1 book.. Amazing what can happen when you don't have to teach, examine, pamper pre-Copernican graduate students, or attend meetings & do administration. My writing is both non-fiction (anthropology/archaeology, sex work research) & novels (5, published by Outskirts Press). As well as a literary memoir published 2017.In 2017 I had to move back to AUS (MEL) to care for a small child. My writing continues, albeit at a slower pace. I have completed a tome which accounts for the big picture culture changes of the Holocene & ends up predicting the startling unexpected & counterintuitive discovery (theoretical) of life fields & life particles. Thus far I can not find a publisher interested.

    • Academic
      • 1988 - 2004

I taught & researched at various prior incarnations of CDU, University College of the Northern Territory, Northern Territory University. CDU itself came into a terminological existence some 6 months before I quit. Fed up with the gluepot of bureaucracy and the reluctance of federal governments to do anything but cut our funding, I took early retirement. I got out before they got me. Many of my colleagues were made redundant, simply because there was no money. The mess began with Howard & Costello in the 1996 budget, & only went downhill from there.

    • Academic Anthropologist
      • Feb 1979 - Jul 1986

I was fortunate to be offered, in my Honours year, a position of Tutor, part-time. This continued into my PhD years, whereby the university system had introduced a setup of Teaching Fellows (half-time tutoring, while doing PhD). I did that through 1986, in which year I was upgraded to a Temporary Lecturer position, filling in for a colleague on Sabbatical Leave.I was also employed for one semester as a part-time Tutor at Griffith University.
