2nd Engineer

I commenced my career with the MOD as 3rd Officer (Engineer) where I was tasked with conducting routine maintenance and repairs on diesel generators, deck equipment, domestic refrigeration systems and air conditioning installations. I was accountable for troubleshooting and defining repair and maintenance requirements, preparing work requisitions and ensuring external contractors were utilised where necessary, and coordinated engineering activities and provided supervision to contractors and junior personnel. I also oversaw and monitored the day to day operations of the engine room whilst leading engine room personnel, and I maintained an inventory of equipment and spare parts ensuring replacements were ordered promptly. I was subsequently promoted to 2nd Officer (Engineer) where I was accountable for overseeing and coordinating engineering and maintenance activities on board a range of vessels including tankers, military, ro-ro, passenger vessels and service repair ships on a global scale. I managed and organised staff resources and watch keeping ensuring all maintenance and repair tasks were successfully completed under challenging situations including staff shortages, and worked closely with contractors throughout maintenance works as well as an unscheduled dry dock to replace thin deck plating as a result of degredation to the hull. I provided comprehensive support to the Chief Engineer Officer in areas including team leadership, staff training and motivation, performance management and quality control ensuring standards were consistently maintained and played a key role in identifying and resolving operational defects including faults with air conditioning systems involving isolating refrigerant gas systems of the air conditioning plant to enable repairs to be carried out. Furthermore, I delivered trusted mentoring and guidance to Engineering Cadets to support them in preparing for EOOW CoC Examinations.
