Research in Communications

The mission of three years consisted of investigating high frequency radio wave propagation in the upper atmosphere at satellite heights .These reflections took place at satellite heights by ionised Sporadic ES clouds. ..Such clouds occur mostly in equatorial regions of the Earth - investigations were therfore carried outfrom NAIROBI in Kenya which sits on the Magnetic equator.Using pulsed radio signal and recording the backscattering of the radio waves from areas covering the Indian Ocean , the Middke East, West Africa and Upper regions of South Africa on a daily basis the possibility ofa special communication technique was established..This project was highly relevant to sophistacated military application and the equipment put at my disposal was wholly of US origin. It is here in Nairobi, during my mission in 1969, that I was invited by NASA as a Space Scentist to join the US Air Force special teamset up in Mauritius (Indian Ocean) to monitorthe Space Capsule for the MOON Landing..The Indian Ocean was a very strategic area for the spacecraft trajectory beacause it was from here on its final parking orbit the booster rocket had to be ignited to send the spacecraft on its trajectory to the MOON..Any mishap with ignition the mission had to be aborted and the capsule brought down with all the risks that this entail. The Indian Ocean and Mauritius wereprovided with well organised emergency measures
