Shafran joined the global law firm of Bingham McCutchen in 1995 as the firm's first director of marketing, and spent 17 years managing all aspects of the firm's internal and external communications. During his tenure, Bingham grew from a regional firm with 175 lawyers in four offices to an international firm with more than 1000 lawyers in 14 offices worldwide. This unusual rate of growth was fueled by the acquisition of 10 other law firms, requiring a series of sophisticated and integrated communications strategies developed and implemented by Shafran and his team. He also provided communications counsel to Bingham clients involved in various types of litigation ranging from product liability, toxic torts, employment discrimination and unionization to bankruptcies, insider trading, securities fraud and hostile takeovers. During more than seven years as Executive Vice President/Partner at Cone Communications, one of Boston’s largest PR agencies, Shafran developed communications programs for the Boston Stock Exchange, Comfed Bancorp, Marriott Corporation, Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, McDonald’s, Reebok International, The Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Environmental Recovery Systems, Massachusetts Convention Center Authority, American Tourister, Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law (Massachusetts) and the John F. Kennedy Library.Shafran served as Deputy Commissioner of the Mass. Department of Commerce, where he developed the “Spirit of Massachusetts” campaign to promote Massachusetts as a business-friendly tourist destination. He was also vice president and director of PR at Arnold Worldwide, where he won the Publicity Club of New England’s Super Bell Award. He began his career at Burson-Marsteller in New York, one of the world’s leading PR firms, and served as executive assistant to the director of the Mass. Governor’s Committee on Criminal Justice and director of advertising and PR at CLSI, a manufacturer of computer systems for libraries.
