You can swim in the river poolsand tan in total privacy along the path to the waterfalls. Be prepared to beconfronted with the noises in your head – because that it all you will hear, other thanbirds twittering and Shaka’s odd bark at the porcupine at night.Family and friend groups love the farm style living which is part of Paardeplaats – cooking on wood stoves or open fires, solar motion lights and paraffin lanterns. Children catch tadpoles in the stream and mine gold in the quarry at leisure.The fauna and flora on the farm have been put there by God, energy comes from asound solar system, complimented by wood burning and gas stoves – we are totallyoff the grid. Star gazers love the true darkness at night, hikers are spoilt withmagnificent views of the mountains and the two valleys meeting. Plant specialistswho know where to find the Brownleea griminicola field orchid and nearby tree ferns,appreciate hikes in the veld and along the river ramble. (This love was ignited by Annemarie Kriel-De Munnik, ourpassionate French teacher at the Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool, Pretoria.)My writing career started as journalist on the Arts and Women’s pages at Hoofstad, theAfrikaans daily in Pretoria, back in the late 1970’s. I always loved columns, features andpeople stories – cannot stand politics and sensational news.As editor of the Parent Guidance Association I compiled Uit die Dagboek van ‘n Ma, acollection of mothers’ stories about child rearing. In 2016 I published my own journal onthe fruits of grief, Rou Vrugte, to be translated once time allows. At present I write funarticles for the local press on wine tastings, farm festivals, church bazaars and whateverhappens in small towns like Lydenburg. I also do research for presenters who speak tothe nation.
