Developing of relationships over many years allowed prospective clients to build confidence in a broker arrangement.Negotiating and placement of underwriting capacity for NZ based business by promoting the specialist skills and market knowledge to risk carriers looking to utilize capital in this region.

My role covered the successful set-up and operation of a new reinsurance branch based in Auckland for GE Employers Re, incorporating underwriting and marketing responsibilities for the New Zealand and Pacific region. Income grew over the 8 year period to $10m consisting of individual risk and treaty excess of loss contracts. Responsibilities included:Underwriting and assessment of risks across property and casualty classes, specific to local requirements, taking into account such factors as natural peril and occupational characteristics. Facilitate and distribution of property and casualty reinsurance contracts in line with local jurisdiction/regulatory requirements. Marketing and new business responsibilities for the range of products underwritten.Relationship management at a senior level to promote the GE ERC franchise.Provide to GE ERC an insurance strategy and technical knowledge for the region to successfully underwrite risk transfer options.Work within quality parameters and maintain regulatory oversight within the local financial services sector. Achievements during this time included the development of the new underwriting role, targeting key business and completion of a marketing plan for New Zealand, successfully introducing the new underwriting entity.Achieved growth targets required by management and within profit margin guidelines.

First introduction to reinsurance working as a Property and Casualty Facultative Underwriter.Responsibilities included the underwriting of individual risk accounts for clients as well as the marketing of Gen Re products which were innovative at the time and new to many local insurers.For Casualty business, maintaining a thorough understanding of the NZ legal/litigious environment was essential for rating and allocation of capacity by class of business was integral in the role. Gen Re provided extensive training in Property and Casualty underwriting, attending Gen Re courses overseas, including spending time with US and UK based lead underwriters. This experience provided a broad understanding in the assessment of risk from an international perspective.This training provided me the confidence to maintain and grow a successful reinsurance portfolio in New Zealand.Gen Re merged with Cologne Re at which point I moved positions with other Gen Re staff to a new reinsurer in the region.
