Since founding CHI in 1968, Dr. Narin's work has defined the leading edge of science and technology evaluation. Under his direction CHI published more than 150 papers, book chapters and reports, and was granted 2 patents, US Patent No. 6175824 "Method and Apparatus for Choosing a Stock Portfolio, Based on Patent Indicators," issued 16 January 2001.and No. 6832211 " System and Method for Producing Technology-based Price Targets for a Company," issued 14 December 2004. His research led the way through four generations of evaluation work. CHI started with the analysis of science in the 1970s, including the creation of all the literature, literature citation and patent citation indicators (bibliometric indicators) used in the National Science Boards biennial Science and Technology Indicators reports, from the first Science Indicators 1972 report through the forthcoming Science and Engineering 2012 report. In the 1980's CHI extended the bibliometric analysis of literature citations to patent citation analysis, and pioneered the application of bibliometric techniques to corporate technology evaluation. In the late 1980's CHI developed the first patent-to-paper citation database, and went on to show that there were rapidly growing links between science and technology. In the 1990s CHI extended this line of analysis to the economic realm, and obtained 2 patents delineating the relationship between patent citations and company stock market performance. CHI's first contract was to complete the well known TRACES study - Technology in Retrospect and Critical Events in Science- in 1968. Narin had been Principle Investigator of that study when it was started at IIT Research Institute in 1966. That study was one of the first attempts to quantify the Research and Development process by tracing and timing important events through the stages of non-mission research, mission oriented research, and development and application.
