In the Summer of 2022, I took part in an extracurricular research project under the supervision of Dr Richard Urbanowicz. This study aimed to compare the prevalence of Clostridium difficile toxin-specific IgA and IgG antibodies between cystic fibrosis patients, symptomatic C. difficile infections and healthy controls, analysing the protection conferred by antibodies in the serum of each patient. During my time spent working with Dr Urbanowicz, aside from honing my currently lab skills, I learnt several new techniques, such as how to perform ELISA’s and neutralisation assays, as well as learning tissue culture techniques such as cell passaging and cell counting. Aside from learning new valuable skills, the time I spent working on this project enabled me to directly experience the lab environment.Performed research on Clostridium difficile infection in cystic fibrosis patients.Learnt lab techniques such as ELISA, neutralisation assays and tissue culture techniques.Successfully handled data analysis using GraphPad Prism.
