Joined the Company at it's inception, and was part of the operations team which successfully took RAF Finningley from a military airfield to a fully licensed CAA aerodrome, which was the first commercial airport to open in the UK for thirty years. The main remit of the job was to safeguard the airfield by means of apron, taxiway and runway inspections and the implementation of low visibility and de-icing procedures, hence ensuring a safe working environment in the airfield. As it was a new airport, it presented a very challenging environment. My supervisory role presented new challenges particularly in training new staff in airside health and safety procedures and working in a safe environment. Responsibilities also included a major project which was the writing of the Emergency Orders for the Operations Department and Duty Managers for all eventualities ranging from Aircraft Standby to Aircraft Accident. After testing these orders by means of a major exercise, this project is now a working document and was endorsed by the CAA in their pre aerodrome licensing audit.Other responsibilities included the implementation of the airside penalty points system for airside driving, the issuing of airside driver/vehicle permits and the issuing of permits for airside works. Further responsibilities included monitoring the operational activities of all third party operators namely caterers, cleaners, fuellers, handling agents and internal departments; and trouble shooting any problems which arose in the course of their activities. Was also involved with two other projects, the first being the upgrade of the runway lighting system from Cat 1 to Cat III B, while the second dealt with the periodic updating of the Standard Operating Procedures to reflect the airfield's operational status.Developed a wide range of skills particularly relating in delivering training to staff and managing the airfield environment.
