Feeding America Riverside | San Bernardino (FARSB) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit food bank dedicated to fighting hunger and improving nutrition in the Inland Empire of California. In the start of 2022, they announced a new initiative in their yearly plan to begin efforts in advocacy, public policy, and government relations. This initiative became the purpose of my internship.-Proposed and helped provide content for a new advocacy page on our website to promote community awareness. The page provides information on state and federal legislation, guidance on contacting elected officials, a myth busting section on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and blog posts for a deep-dive into the factors surrounding food insecurity.-Designed a five-year plan for improving and creating new advocacy measures in alignment with Feeding America's advocacy awards.-Researched and prepared a poll for 2022 gubernatorial candidates regarding their positions on food insecurity, racial inequity, school lunches, improved nutrition, farmer protections, and climate action.-Contacted state elected officials in regards to the 2022 gubernatorial elections with the poll, such that community members could better understand the state candidates.-Revitalized the blog, providing researched pieces on the upcoming Farm Bill, TEFAP and other emergency waivers, CNR and California's Universal School Lunches, the White House Conference on Hunger, disruptions in the global supply chain, SB 1383 and climate change, Hunger Action Month, and food literacy/waste reduction.-Researched state legislation and helped prepare organization opinions on legislation for public release.-Attended a distribution event and helped inform local elected officials of future distributions and opportunities for community support.-Attended several conferences, webinars, and online lectures provided by Feeding America, other associated food banks, community partners, and the White House.
