    Following two years in the Support office of National Grid, Hinckley (The DNCC), I retrained to take up an Operator role in the Control Room, with Wales & West Utilities. Both roles require knowledge and understanding of Gas operations, compliant with Network Code, and the GS(M)R. The Support function was covered by the SOMSA framework agreement, and hence was prior to Network Sales. Completion of Sale and managed separation saw the closure of WWU's SOMSA agreement, by which time I was a qualified Licensed to Operate, Operator, based in Newport in South Wales.Prior roles include; Laboratory support to the Environmental Sciences dept. of Norwich University (UEA) and Corrosion Science/Engineering researcher with British Gas Research (ERS in Killingworth), moving with the company to BG Technology (latterly Advantica Technologies), based in Loughborough.Prior to my career in Science/Engineering, I was employed by BNFL at their uranium (U-235/U-238) separation plant on the Wirral, where I became "time-served" as an Apprentice Fitter/Turner

    Development of Corrosion Research methods for seawater and produced aquifer-water, acidified by dissolved CO2 and H2S (termed sweet and sour corrosion respectively). This included design of rigs, to model conditions in sub-sea well-heads, and production pipelines to onshore facilities. The testing was aimed at assessment of corrosion rates and corrosion inhibitor efficacy, using both static and high-shear Rotating Cylinder Electrodes (RCE), bi-metallic and multi-metallic corrosion. Also developed test rigs for production and inhibition of potentially damaging barite and calcite scale deposits, and methane hydrate. Measurement was by LPRE (linear polarization resistance measurement) and AC-impedance.Another major project was development of a Corrosion Guide for BG Storage, which covered the water treatment of their cooling towers, encompassing both corrosion, inspection and measurement. The guide included testing for water-bourn Legionella activity, to be carried-out by site personnel

    Contracted to work as a Lab Technician for British Gas (BG plc.) in the Corrosion section of ERS (the Engineering Research Station) based in Killingworth, Newcastle upon Tyne.The appointment was aimed at provision of support during site-closure and Laboratory (and team) relocation to Loughborough, in the East Midlands. Following my development of new corrosion testing rigs and methodologies, I was invited to apply for a position with BG plc., to take-up the post of corrosion research technician (actual posting; Scientific Officer (SO1), with the Gas Research & Technology Centre, BG plc.

    First job following my leaving school. Started at age of 16 and lasted 4 years total to become "Time Served". Training included:1. Operation of laths (manual, Capstan turret lath and basics of CNC programmable machines - CNC had not at that time been PC-driven. Programs were created on CNC control-board using punch-cards)2. Other machine skills included: Surface grinding, Horizontal and Vertical Milling, with dividing-head4. Bench-fitting and marking-up5. Technical drawing - emphasis on flat patterns required to fabricate complex ducting transition pieces6. Fabrication and Welding of sheet materials
