Abilene Clean & Proud is a nonprofit group started to enlighten and encourage citizens to Reuse, Recycle & Reduce. After a small public event at the local zoo and broad interest was expressed from the community, in 1986 I coordinated a convention with assistance from the Sierra Club, TX Agriculture Dept, North TX Council of Governments, local colleges and volunteer agency's that included venders of environmentally friendly products and services, workshops, and scholastic education. This annual event is still held.

Spring Clean For Abilene is an annual event to help clean-up the city and put useful items in hands of those that would benefit from them. Citizens are encouraged to clean out their closets, garages, store rooms, etc and dispose of objects they no longer needed and /or wanted. Seniors were matched with volunteers (Boy & Girl Scouts, volunteers from the Volunteer Center, etc) to assist in the removal. These items were taken to a central location within the city to be reused, recycled or disposed of in an environmentally safe place... i.e. Old lawn mowers, lawn equipment, bicycles, tricycles were passed to the Boys & Girls Club so that young men and women could learn to repair them and through a process earn one. Still useful furniture and household goods were passed on to the Women's and Children's Shelter, other items were passed on to special needs groups or the Goodwill & Salvation Army. Newspapers, metals, etc were recycled, as well has Hazardous Wastes items in a proper way. This annual event is also still held.
