In over 40 years of full-time congregational ministry, these were some of my high spots.• I have led six congregations through noteworthy organizational change (by leadership, teaching, weekly preaching & writing, coaching, and more). • I have directed a congregational relocation project after one church quadrupled in size under my leadership. I oversaw study groups, architectural plans, fund-raising and civic compliance. This church today is Fairfax County’s largest United Methodist congregation.• I led two numerically declining congregations into new acceptance of their unique mission, vision and values. In my tenure new staff positions were created, new leaders trained and empowered, fresh goals set, and clear alignment of priorities established. • I have supervised staffs ranging in size from 2-16 people. I consistently aligned responsibilities with the organization’s mission, vision and values; led team-building initiatives; conducted work performance discussions & evaluations; initiated ‘difficult conversations’; and coached and mentored numerous people. • I have used counseling & coaching abilities to help clergy and congregants alike resolve personal, family & professional issues and set & keep new goals.• I have taught second-career pastors basic & advanced preaching skills for 14 years (study, organization, delivery) as well as contemporary theology at Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, DC. • I have led initiatives in embracing diversity in traditional communities (e.g., leading outreach to an African-American community in small town Virginia; adopting a Statement of Welcome & Inclusivity by suburban congregation; establishing interfaith relationships with Turkish Mosque in Northern Virginia suburbs).
