    • United States
    • Higher Education
    • 700 & Above Employee
    • Budge Hall Janitor
      • 1949 - 1950

The job was to keep the residence hall bath rooms clean and fresh. An especially distasteful job on Sundays, the morning after the inexperienced students got sick from too much alcohol. However, the pay of one meal of all I could eat per day was what kept me alive.

    • Dishwasher
      • 1948 - 1949

I was on a team of 4 students who pre-washed all the dishes and loaded them into a dishwashing machine in the central dinning hall. The pay of one all-you-can-eat meal a day was well deserved.

    • Postal Clerk
      • Aug 1947 - May 1948
      • Hazen, ND

Most of my time was spent sorting mail by hand and placing it intorented mail boxes. I would also sell stamps as required. The most exciting part of the job was the 45 calibre six shooter that was mounted under the counter and aimed at the customer belly. I case of a robbery, I could simply reach down to the gund and pull the trigger. It would fire through the wood panel between me and the customer.I got the job because of my high score on the Civil Service exam, however, I thin my being an expert with a gun was also a factor. The pay was the highest of any employee in the town. I saved a lot of money in order to start college the fall of 1948

    • Soda Jerk
      • Sep 1945 - Jun 1946
      • Hazen, ND

Every evening after school, I rushed to the drug store to man the soda fountain while the high school students were streaming from the high school to the down town and right by the drug store. The store was very popular because the ice cream cones were only 5 cent each. An extra big scoop would usually get me a penny tip; a big addition to the 50 cents a day I was paid.

    • Bookkeeper
      • Sep 1945 - Jun 1946
      • Hazen, ND

My job was to maintain the books, including the inventory, of the big enterprise. The entries piled up all day and after school I worked until all the entries were completed. This was a double entry system in a ledger. No computer. However, the cash register did retain a record of every sale.I made big money. 50 cents an hour and on a big day I worked 3 or 4 hours.I got the job when the owner came to the high school and asked the bookkeeping teacher which girl was the best bookkeeper. He needed somebody reliable and accurate. The teacher asked him if he had a problem with a male bookkeeper. He anwered he had problem and did not believe there were any. The teacher recommended me as the most accurate. I was also the most reliable since without a job I did not eat.

    • Furnace Man
      • Sep 1944 - Jun 1945
      • Hazen, ND

My job was to shovel coal into the furnace of the big department and grocery store at midnight and again at 6 AM. It got to be 30 below zero Fahrenheit at night and unless the furnace was fed coal the grocerys would freeze and in the morning the the customers would freeze. Because I was homeless, unbeknownst to Bill Hanewald, I slept on the floor next to the furnace in the cellar of the store. My pay was 50 cents a day.
