    In January 1983 I was appointed the Auckland District Manager of H&R Block ‘The Income Tax People’ as it was known. At that time I was responsible for the operation of the Auckland Head office and 9 suburban offices in Auckland located at: -• Takapuna • Dominion Road, Mt Eden• Sandringham• New Lynn• Henderson• Pakuranga• Otahuhu• Manurewa• PapakuraAll of the above offices were open Monday to Friday for six months of the year and all, but one office, were closed for six months of the year. All of the staff except for my-self and my administration assistant worked part time and comprising mainly of Retired people and Mothers. This brought its challenges as you can imagine. In January each year the preparation for the manning of the offices required: -• Encouraging prior staff to return.• Running a refresher course for prior staff returning on the current year tax preparation, legislation and requirements.• Running a course to train new staff on the current year tax preparation, legislation and requirements. Note: Passing the course did not guarantee employment.• After the courses were finished all those that passed were interviewed for employment.Each week from the 1st April to the 7th September, the offices required preparation of staff rosters.Each day the offices required: -• Ensuring that the offices were actually manned and if not arranging for staff to man the offices.• Delivery of office supplies and checked tax returns, uplifting prepared tax returns for checking.As you can imagine this was a challenge. As the District Manager I was on a Base Salary. I could earn a bonus of up to 75% of the Base Salary if I increased: -a. The number of tax returns prepared as a certain percentage of over the previous year as well asb. Increasing the net profit as a certain percentage of over the previous year.I was fortunate in the time that I was the District Manager I received maximum bonus each year.

    On the 12th January 1960, at the age of 15½ years old I joined the NZ Army as a Regular Force Cadet. I marched into Waiouru Military Camp, along with 100 plus other boys to become a member of Russell Class. On my 18th Birthday, having spent 2 years 4 months in Waiouru I graduated into the Corp of RNZEME in the Regular Force of the NZ Army as a Craftsman (Private). Although my desire was to be an administration clerk the desire of most parents was to see their sons get a trade (Motor Mechanic, Fitter & Turner etc.). Although those in authority over me tried to convince my parents that I would make a good clerk it was not to happen. I became an Armourer involved with the repair and maintenance of rifles, pistols, machine guns, Mortars etc. This later included Artillery Howitzers and Tank Armament. My heart was never in being a tradesman and although I reached Artificer Status, which was the highest trade status one could gain, I kept looking for administration jobs whenever I could. Also in 1967 I undertook and passed a Basic All Arms Instructors Course. To gain practical experience I spent two intakes training National Servicemen, during this time I gained a desire for teaching. In 1969 on my return to NZ after having served 12 months in Vietnam, where I repaired and maintained the Artillery Howitzers used by both the New Zealand and Australian Artillery Battery’s, I had the desire to become an accountant. I studied, sat and passed the School Certificate bookkeeping and University Entrance Accounting examinations. At that time in my career I had been promoted to Sergeant and got a job as the Treasurer of a Sergeant’s Mess, (similar to a private club e.g. an RSA) and also undertook studying NZ Tax Preparation.I held various Treasure and Auditing positions from that time on both here in NZ and during a 2 year Tour of Duty in Singapore with the NZ Army. I returned to NZ and retired from the NZ Army as a Warrant Officer Class II in August 1981.
