Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital is a 500 bed public tertiary hospital in metropolitan Perth, Western Australia. The Department of Emergency Medicine at that time saw 60,000 patients per year, and has continued to grow. As Director led the operational management and strategic planning, and oversaw the growth of the department into a leading training department, with strong subspecialty development in Toxicology and Ultrasound. Had managerial responsibility for 50 medical staff, 130 nursing staff and 5 administrative support staff. Patient Services, clerical and allied health services also operated within the Department, bringing the number of staff to 350.Change Management:• Introduction of the “4 hour rule” in WA (precursor to NEAT) which included creating and implementing a strategy to make this achievable and reportable.• Held a lead role in designing the new Emergency Department which needed potential for growth and flexibility. Managed the transition into the new Department. • Established the first Emergency-based allied health Care Coordination Team in Western Australia, which provided 7 day per week physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social work and discharge coordinator support for the Department.
