Following an academic career spanning more than 45 years, Dr Wright holds the position of Emeritus Professor of Environmental Toxicology at the University of Maryland, Center for Environmental Science, and since 1995 has been President of Environmental Research Services, Baltimore, MD, USA . He is the author of over 150 peer-reviewed papers and books on physiology and toxicology, including the Text-Book Environmental Toxicology 635pp. Cambridge University Press. He has conducted research into problems associated with non-indigenous species for the past 25 years and has authored over 100 papers and presentations on that subject. He holds three patents on water treatment technologies. Over a period of more than 20 years he has conducted several land-based and shipboard studies on the effect of oil and oil dispersants on aquatic organisms in the U.K. and U.S.A., and performed the role of Chief Scientist at the site of the Deepwater Horizon spill in 2010. He has also conducted more than 30 shipboard ballast water treatment trials. He is a Fellow of the Institute for Marine Engineering Science and Technology (IMarEST), Co-chairman of the IMarEST Ballast Water Experts Group, and is a delegate of the International Maritime Organization Marine Environmental Protection Committee and Pollution Prevention and Response Committee.
