    • Executive Director of International / Principal
      • Aug 2010 - Dec 2013

Partnering with the CEO and executive team to lead an initiative to expand HMC Architect's brand and expertise globally, I authored and built both strategic and business development plans to achieve success. Attached to my Executive Leadership role as HMC's Director of Design, I was given the additional title of Executive Director of International, and worked with the CFO to create the appropriate legal and financial structures in creating HMCAi in Madrid, Spain. In the short time of this initiative, we were able to quickly and successfully land projects and create strategic alignments. Our efforts and awards in China and Latin America provided great exposure of HMC’s expertise and acceptance as an international design firm. Notable Works:1. Shunde First People's Hospital (Foshan, China)2. DuocUC Sede Santiago Centro (Santiago, Chile)3. UFTSM Science/Physics Center (Valparaiso, Chile)4. Cruz Blanca Hospital (Santiago, Chile)5. Nanshan People's Hospital (Shenzhen, China)6. HKMZ Boundary Crossing Center (Hong Kong, China)

    • Executive Director of Design / Principal
      • Dec 2005 - Dec 2013

In 2005, I was asked to come to HMC Architects in California by CEO - Randy Peterson to help establish a strategic initiative based on developing a respected design presence, elevating the firm’s brand and culture. Starting in San Diego as a Designer Director and Managing Principal, I lead this office in both operations and business development, partnering to create a vibrant and integrated culture, working with both education and healthcare markets to establish successful work. After a few years of assimilation into the firms leadership, I became a Principal, and soon after that, HMC's Director of Design, leading the firm, while partnering with design leadership in the development of "design excellence" throughout each office. This balance of design being an integral part of architecture and management became a catalyst for the firm's increased presence and respect within the industry. New talent emerged and was brought in to help lead and inspire a culture of integration and innovation.During this time, HMC became a thought leader in areas such as...• Patient-Centered Care• Evidence-Base Design• Virtual Design• Learning and Healing Environments• High Performance/Sustainable DesignNotable Works:1. UCSD Rady School of Management II (La Jolla, CA)2. Frontier Project (Rancho Cucamonga, CA)3. Martin Luther King Community Hospital (Los Angeles, CA)4. Palomar Industrial Technology Center (San Marcos, CA)5. UCI Paul Merage Center for Real Estate (Irvine, CA)6. SFSU J Paul Leonard and Sutro Library (San Francisco, CA)

    • Executive Director of International / Design Director
      • 1995 - 2005

In a time of further international recognition and expansion for Ellerbe Becket, I was given the opportunity to lead many of their global initiatives, helping to develop relationships throughout Asia, Eastern Europe, MENA, and Latin America. During that time, I managed design studios in Washington DC and Minneapolis, and spent 3-years in Moscow managing and restructuring that office. Working in unique areas around the world provided me great personal growth, and expanded my understanding and respect for the diversity of people and cultures I connected with. Interesting fact; most of this time was navigated without cell-phones or the internet, where we used fax machines from the airplanes and travelled with floppy discs to transfer critical drawings and information.Coming back from Moscow, I helped the firm develop the healthcare work in the Middle East, and further with the Data Center growth in Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico), positioning Design/Build project completion in a total of 8-months, from land acquisition to full commission and operation. After the Data bust in 2001, Ellerbe Becket made a corporate decision to begin reducing their international exposure, and I was brought in to help secure and design works in the United States again, and leading a design studio in EB's headquarter location of Minneapolis. Notable Works:1. Hae Song Plaza (Inchon, Korea)2. Hospital 31(Moscow, Russian Federation)3. Optiblobe (Rio DeJanerio, Sau Paulo, Buenos Aires)4. Coffman Memorial Union (Minneapolis, MN)5. Aspetar / Khalifa Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Hospital (Doha, Qatar)6. Rady School of Management I (LaJolla, CA)

    • Design Director
      • 1989 - 1995

In a period of a cultural shift towards “extraordinary architecture,” Ellerbe Becket began to establish a greater design emphasis and presence in many of their offices and studios. I was asked to join the New York office (Peter Pran studio), to help in creating a unique studio to capture his passion and global recognition. It moved quickly with the coveted awards of both New York State Psychiatric Institute and New York Police Academy right around the same time. I joined the studio to work on both, but quickly took the on architectural lead with NYSPI, developing the progressive design into a buildable solution. The recognized success of that project immediately brought international awareness and we were being invited to a variety of works around the globe. I was asked to help lead the efforts in Southeast Asia, and was soon working in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and South Korea. Over the next years, I partnered to manage the Jakarta and London offices, and worked with great teams on many recognizable and significant works and initiatives. Notable Works:1. New York Psychiatric Institute (New York City, NY)2. Graha Kuningan (Jakarta, Indonesia)3. Karat Tower (Jakarta, Indonesia)4. Crystal Gardens (Surabaya, Indonesia)5. SUNY Binghamton School of Business (Binghamton, NY)

    • Project Designer
      • 1987 - 1989

Ellerbe Becket recruited me during my last year at the University of Minnesota – School of Architecture by Rich Varda (Director of Design) and John Gaunt (CEO), where I was immediately placed in a studio to work on the LaSalle Plaza project. As a young Project Designer, typically you are given smaller assignments with little exposure, however in my case, they placed me in a unique position where I had the opportunity to work directly with experts in each critical area of architecture (Rich Varda – Design, Bob DeBruin – Project Management, and Dexter Marolt – Technical Architecture). Sitting in the same pod as these leaders provided me the exposure and mentorship to all aspects of the industry, and an opportunity to grow quickly with responsibility and challenge. With success in these challenges, came more responsibility and soon I was given a key designer role on the exterior of LaSalle Plaza, and next in the planning and cultural identity of Ellerbe Becket’s new offices in downtown Minneapolis. My roles expanded into more design responsibility and further into partnering on project pursuits and establishing design concepts and architectural platforms for new projects. This growth worked into more partnerships and leadership opportunities, and as one in a new core of young designers, we became recognized for our part in developing the new culture of design at Ellerbe Becket.Notable Works:1. LaSalle Plaza (Minneapolis, MN)2. Eller Becket Offices (Minneapolis, MN)3. Riverside Bank (Minneapolis, MN)4. Bin Laden Headquarters (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia)5. Canadian National Royal Trust (Toronto, Canada)6. Kia Motors Pavilion (Seoul, Korea)
