Legislative Assisantant

May 1988 - May 1990
The Honorable John Conyers, Jr.Legislative AssistantAs Legislative Assistant, I responded to constituent mail, prepared independent and confidential review, evaluations and commented on reports and other information submitted the Congressman. I researched and prepared drafts and other materials for the introductions and passage of the "Martin Luther king, Jr. Federal Holiday commission Extension Act," Public Law 101-30, which extends the MLK Commission for five years and authorizes federal funding of $300,00.00 annually. Federal funding was a significant accomplishment over the objections of senator Jesse Helms (R-NC), who vowed that the MLK Federal Holiday Commission would only be funded over his dead body.I also developed and maintained good working relationships with Members of Congress and their staffs to help achieve the legislative goals of my boss. Groups and individuals outside Congress were also important to generate support for our legislation .

Legislative Assistant

May 1984 - May 1988
The Honorable Charles A. HayesLegislative AssistantAs Legislative Assistant, I drafted and analyzed legislative language, Dear Colleague Letters, Extensions of Remarks, Floor Statements and constituent correspondence. I researched and prepared primary policy analysis on job, labor and employment discrimination issues. I was the national strategist for the passage and enactment of "The Quality of Life Actions Act," H. R. 1398 and "The Economic Bill of rights Act," H. R. 2870, in the 99th congress. Congressman Hayes wanted to create a full employment society where everyone who wanted to work would be able to find good jobs at decent wages. He also believed that the American people deserved fundamental economic rights so they could have a good education, good health care and proved decent housing for their families. These two comprehensive bill, when enacted would have with fairness and equity, moved America dramatically into a full employment society.
