Dane A. Penland is senior photographer for the National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. His career at the Smithsonian Institution began as a photographer in 1977; he advanced to Chief of Special Assignments, and then Chief of Imaging and Technology Services, Printing and Photographic Services. Throughout his many years at the Smithsonian, Dane Penland has photographed many of the diverse topics from full-size locomotives to microphotography of live larvae, from portraits of the Supreme Court Justices to world-famous photographs of the Hope Diamond. He has published numerous posters as well as contributed to Institution publications, including Reflections on the Wall: Vietnam Memorial; Suiting Everyone; Crossroads of Continents; American Clocks; The American Presidency; After Sputnik; and America’s Hangar, as well to his first book, The National Gem Collection.
