Sales & Designer
-
Feb 2001 - Jan 2002
On graduating from Natal Technikon, I joined my Powerhouse Clothing as a designer. My initial duties included:The design of garments and prints for mens, ladies, boys and girls sports wear ranges. not only the Powerhouse brand, but a number of other brands owned by their clients, including Mr. Price, (Red, Maxed, core etc.), Ackerman’s, The Hub, Truworths, Edgars, Billabong USA, JC Penny amongst others. The design of corporate and promotional wears for a large number of South Africa’s corporate clientele. Here the edge on our competitors was gained by high fashion ranges using inspiration from my designs on the fashion side for the above brands. Clients here included: Distell, Brandhouse, SAB, Pernod Ricard, JTI, Hollard Insurance and many more great names.Part of the design process included sourcing concepts from overseas, researching fabrics, working with samplists and CMT’s as far as making concepts more practical and cost effective. After three months I was promoted to department head overseeing the two other designers. My responsibilities then increased to include:Client relations. Taking garments through from concept to production. Co-ordinating with the QA department and samplists to make sure all areas of production went smoothly.Monitoring all suppliers to make sure work was progressing as planned.Receiving and issuing briefs from merchandisers and clients to the designers and samplists. All artwork and production related costings and running costs of the department. At the same time I maintained my design obligations. When the question arose of how to make our brand successful overseas I created a cartoon concept, which has been taken up by Fox TV in America. When I decided to move back to Cape Town, the head of the corporate division approached me to start an division for them there.
