I recently completed a client engagement that included purchasing tens of thousands of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). The volume of the purchase wasn’t unusual – but the unit price and total dollar cost were. The total cost was about six times what we would have paid as few as two years ago for the same number of RECs. As RECs have been the “go-to” carbon mitigation instrument for corporate carbon footprint accounting for decades, I decided to do some investigating to see if there was some other carbon-mitigation vehicle that could complement the use of RECs. My findings are included in the enclosed white paper I wrote on “Re-assessing Carbon Mitigation Strategies.” In response to our findings, we are working diligently with Colleges, Universities and Businesses offering carbon mitigation alternatives that better meet our clients’ environmental and social justice goals in a more cost-effective manner.
