I work for 2 hours a week with 8th grade girls in South Central, Los Angeles. W.Y.S.E. is a curriculum-based, group mentorship program that provides young women with the resources, information and support necessary to make informed decisions about relationships, sexuality, and their futures in order to create community change. We deal with issues such as eating disorders, depression, conflict resolution, sexual decision-making and preventative methods, and drugs and alcohol. In addition to group sessions every Wednesday afternoon, I also take my three mentees out at least once a month, and tutor one of them in Algebra every Tuesday (and sometimes Friday) afternoon. I also make sure to call them at least once a week on the telephone to keep in touch.
