    I tutor international expatriate executives and trailing spouses in English at the higher intermediate and advanced levels, meeting four hours a week with each client for months. I also help these expats to orient themselves and their families to the local area and region. We also discuss cultural practices. The position requires a broad understanding of business (to provide coaching in business communication and discuss business issues), as well as broad and eclectic knowledge that ranges from local resources to the historical background for various practices and institutions, and curiosity about other cultures and societies. I have worked with expatriates from Germany, the PRC, Korea, and Belgium. I find the work and the clients interesting, and I have learned a great deal about their societies and gained perspective on my own.

    From 2001 to 2002 and from 2009 to 2014, I taught English composition and other subjects (introduction to literature, introductory business, introductory marketing, consumer behavior, freshman year experience, public speaking, interdisciplinary rhetoric and persuasion, interpersonal communication and developmental English composition, and most recently human resources management and sustainable development) at various colleges in the U.S., France, and Germany. I taught at private and public four-year colleges, inner city community colleges, and at a for-profit two-year college, and so I was exposed to a broad range of organizational cultures, management practices, and student populations. I have consistently tried to expand the portfolio of the subjects I can teach, since I have found that encounters with subjects I am less familiar with changed my thinking and enabled me to enrich the content and improve student engagement and learning in my writing courses.

    I translated a broad range of texts from French into American English: legal documents, RFPs, technical manuals, user guides, marketing materials, literary texts, presentations, training materials, financial statements, transcripts, NGO donor reports, official documents, web sites...The projects ranged in complexity from short documents to hundreds of pages. I coordinated with a partner on the West Coast of the U.S. and served customers in Europe, Asia, and North America.The experience of working closely with such a variety of texts developed my English writing and editing skills, particularly in business communication, and improved my understanding of French (and of course my awareness of the differences between the languages). Working from home in a small business that relied on repeat business meant that I had to be quick to adapt to shifting priorities, meet deadlines, and provide quality service in terms of accuracy, consistency, and stylistic appropriateness.

    First to be hired in a new start-up unit as analyst for surveys on HR and compensation, I quality-checked and analyzed survey data in order to write and edit reports on various industries, and so used spreadsheet and word processing software intensively. At one point, as we migrated from Lotus to Microsoft, I was designing, checking, and analyzing spreadsheets in Lotus and Excel concurrently. I collaborated on several projects with consultants in Russia and Canada, and was asked to help advise a similar start-up unit in Germany. I also trained and supervised temporary analysts, reviewing their work for accuracy. The job required both an attention to detail and the ability to synthesize the findings in clear prose and easy-to-understand graphics. Since the reputation of a world-class consulting firm was at stake, quality was essential. Since we were a start-up, we needed to become as efficient as possible while producing as much as possible, and so we went through several process overhauls that reduced our costs and shortened our production cycle.
