A different approach...I was approached to provide due diligence support for surface facilities. It was nice opportunity to become a Contractor and hopefully have some spare time in between to continue doing interesting work within my network of friends. So Agile Energy Sdn Bhd was established so I could contract my man-hours. We then asked ourselves, why not take this opportunity to make it a Petronas license holding Company, so we went for it and successfully obtained the license. We are still evolving as we go and seeing where the opportunities take us. We are following our name and being Agile at the moment, when the World returns to "normal" after Covid we'll have a better idea of where we are heading and how to get there. We are still passionate about Flow Assurance and about doing it right, I don't see this changing. At the moment we continue to support our network with FA studies and plenty of Due Diligence work that continues unabated during Covid and low oil price!Roll on 2021 and vaccinations!

A new challenge...I'd had similar lengths of time in all my previous roles, so it probably shouldn't have been a surprise that I was read for a new challenge. It was the first time I'd be a team of one in country though.Pace Flow Assurance had been growing in the UK and had been supporting a few flow assurance FEEDs in Asia-Pac. It made sense to therefore have an office in either Perth or KL to support these FEEDs and EPCIs. I accepted the job knowing that whilst there was already opportunities upcoming that I could utilise my existing contacts to provide more opportunities. It was possibly the first time that my timing was off. Our main Client at the time had financially difficulties and the expected jobs didn't arrive. Whilst we won some nice jobs from my network, it wasn't the big jobs that we'd originally been envisioning - and with the oil price going downwards, no big EPCIs were coming.Whilst we were operating at break-even, I couldn't see a way to make it work without a Petronas license. The profit that should have been coming to us on projects was going to the middle man, all we could do was breakeven. I didn't give up, but an opportunity arose to do something different.

Putting my roots down...I'd tried to move to KL in my Advantica days, this not happening was what led to me looking for a new challenge outside of Advantica. There was also an opportunity to set-up an office here with Xodus, but the realisation that I missed the technical aspect of the work when doing the same in Norway, led me to joining Genesis instead.Genesis were already nicely established in KL and had a good pipeline of work coming in. They were keen for me to be technical - make sure we produced high quality deliverables and develop the younger engineers at the same time. It was a very nice fit for this time in my career and I really enjoyed the mentoring side. After a while I found myself getting more involved in the conceptual and front-end studies, not just performing the flow assurance aspects, but starting to manage the entire scope. Again it was fun to learn new things: corrosion/materials, risk assessments, economic analysis. All new and interesting.I was comfortable at Genesis, I was safe at Genesis in an industry that had become very volatile, but then I found myself ready for another challenge.

Norge time...Two weeks after suggesting that if Xodus had an office in Norway, I was agreeing to move to Oslo and set-up and Xodus office there! To be fair, unknown to me, they were already putting plans in place for an office and when I happened to mention I was keen... two stones, one bird and all that.I loved Oslo, such a beautiful City to live in. I wish I'd spent more time enjoying the City and life and less time working though. I learnt an awful lot about setting up an office, business development / networking, managing a team, managing projects at the same time as all of this. We started to establish ourselves and we'd grown the office to 10 people. It was hard work and I realised after a while that I was missing the technical side of the work and that's what I wanted to get back to doing.

Developing further...I jumped at the chance to join Xodus in their newly opened London office. I'd known about Xodus whilst working in Aberdeen and had regularly bumped into people on projects (and in pubs). I realised they were exactly the kind of Company I wanted to work for and helping them establish a presence and reputation in London was going to be exciting. The team in London was small, I was number 8, but the camaraderie and can do attitude was second to none. We quickly got established on the back of a couple of big jobs and just took off. I continued to learn new things, but a lot of my growth during this time came from being a lot more client facing - and I discovered I enjoyed it.To sum the way Xodus operated back then and how quick decisions could be made by the Management. After working a couple of projects in Norway, I casually mentioned that if Xodus wanted to set up an office in Norway I'd happily move over. Two weeks later...

Starting out...I joined Advantica straight from university, literally straight next door to university in fact! I was hired to do Offshore QRAs, but ended up performing everything but! I learnt flow assurance and RAM in Loughborough, Pressure Surge / Water hammer analysis in Houston and then led a small team in Aberdeen. It really was 6 years of solid learning from industry experts.I joined Advantica at the end of a downturn at a time they were changing from being BG's Research and Technology Department to an independent consultant. It was a difficult time for the Company to navigate with people being laid off and a sudden drive to be profitable. However, it was a great Company to be a graduate at, the experience and expertise was second to none - and they all had time to teach. Once they realised I wanted to learn and I was serious about staying within the industry I immediately had 10 technical mentors.I eventually left to take on a new challenge and to increase my knowledge further by working with a more diverse range of clients.
