Equine Specialist
-
Nov 2016 - Jun 2023
Equine specialists are part of a team, alongside a mental health specialist, a client, and horses, to complete the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) Model. This model can be used for many diverse environments, from team-building to rehabilitation. The Stable Grounds is a centre dedicated to assisting specifically Uniformed Personnel (police officers, fire fighters, paramedics, corrections officers, military, and the like) who have been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Injury- formerly known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. At The Stable Grounds, Equine Specialist are responsible for selecting horses to fit clients needs for EAGALA sessions, and ensuring horses are in good health. This involves monitoring and recording patterns or changes in horses behavior and health for records, scheduling appointments for appropriate care providers for the horses, and providing general care for them (such as feeding, brushing, and maintaining cleanliness in the barn and arena). When participating in therapeutic sessions with clients, equine specialists are very attentive to both he client and the horses, and take notes accordingly. After sessions are completed, a follow-up is conducted with the mental health specialist to compare thoughts and notes, and all notes are stored in a confidential and secure location. The equine specialists are part of a community at The Stable Grounds, and are very involved in all aspects of the guests journey to mental recovery in comparison to other facilities. Alongside the therapeutic sessions, all staff members are responsible for supporting the well being of all guests and staff members who are part of the facility, and approach any concerning changes in an appropriate manner.
