The role focuses on a broad range of auditing and assurance activities of all entity types, including individuals, not for profit organisations, small to medium size businesses, high net-worth individuals and those involved in evasion activities. Audit selection is risk-based and requires researching and reviewing a range of information and examining financial accounting systems and controls. Interviewing and meeting with taxpayers is also part of this job. As well as auditing and assurance work I also undertake work of a technical nature, including responding to legal correspondence and dealing with matters raised disputing the department’s position.Key learning outcomes: I had directly contributed to over two dozen in depth tax investigation activities on behalf of the Crown. From time spent in this role I have a robust understanding of New Zealand tax law, IRD policy and various approaches and strategies which individuals and enterprises employ for the purposes of tax planning/strategy.
