    I joined Mopani Copper Mines Plc in June 2011 as Tax Manager, a position which was later renamed Tax Planning & Compliance Manager after some business process re-engineering in the Finance function of the company. I started this department from scratch as the tax function was previously part of another section under the Finance function, now with a staff complement of four officers. My key responsibilities included:3.3.1 Tax ComplianceManaging the tax needs of day-to-day business processes, ranging from trade taxes (Domestic VAT, Reverse VAT, Import & Excise Duties) to Income Taxes (Corporate Taxes, Mineral Royalties, PAYE & WHT). This also involves reviewing tax computations, assessments, audits, e-returns & e-payments, queries and correspondence. Amongst the key assignments I have been closely associated with is the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), where Mopani Copper Mines Plc was awarded for demonstrating consistency, prudence and timeliness in its audit and accounting processes in adherence to the EITI reporting requirements. I have also attended and made presentations at various fora organised by Government and Civil Society both locally and abroad. 3.3.2 Tax Planning This involves conducting Tax Reviews and Health Checks, and providing Tax Advice to mine management on a diverse range tax issues affecting the business, both structured and ad hoc. This also includes providing opinions/advice on tax scenarios of a regional and international nature, covering risks/exposures and tax planning opportunities. I also provide tax advice on major mining capital projects. And to keep abreast with developments and best practices in the industry, I been closely associated with the Chamber of Mines of Zambia (CMZ) via a committee responsible for analysing and making proposals for fiscal amendments, including the VAT Rule 18 argument affecting exporters in the mining and manufacturing sectors in the economy.

Among the major trainings I conducted were;• IAS 12 (Income Taxes) for Deloitte & Touché Zambia professional staff;• Tax Workshops for various corporate clients, both profit & not-for-profit organisations.I left Deloitte & Touché in April 2010 in order to pursue some further studies at post-graduate level.

    During my stay at the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA), an organization charged with the responsibility of collection of tax revenue on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Zambia, I served in various capacities at different levels in the organisation as follows:3.1.1 Inspector of TaxesI joined the ZRA in January 1995. Upon completion of the requisite specialised training, I started serving in the capacity of Inspector of Taxes, a position in the operational management level of the organization. 3.1.2 Chief Revenue Officer – MISIn 2003, I was elevated to head the Management Information Systems (MIS) function of the Domestic Taxes Division of the ZRA at the Head Office. 3.1.3 Senior Inspector - Other TaxesIn 2006, I moved to this new role, also based at Head Office. I occupied this position until I left ZRA in March 2008.3.1.4 Training Facilitator In my various capacities as detailed above, I was also attached to the training section of the organization as a Training Facilitator. In addition to in-house trainings and inductions, I also conducted outdoor taxpayer educational seminars and workshops.
