    Due to the abrupt departure of the senior management I was appointed by the shareholders as new General Manager. I became responsible for all activities concerning Tembo Chipboards Ltd. (saw mill) and UCFC Ltd. (furniture factory). The biggest challenges were making the current production process lean and efficient, increasing the added value on our products and achieving a constant flow of raw materials (logs) for a stable price. This all has to be achieved while the company is heavily depended on the Tanzanian Government since they are in charge of the plantation. The following report highlights the day to day difficulties (http://formin.finland.fi/public/download.aspx?ID=93650&GUID=%7B31EC5498-632A-4D64-BC1B-BA5E5318B9F8%7D)Together with the local management we took the following actions:- Downsizing; reduced the number of employees and reduced the overhead costs by 48%.- Introduced a new technique in the UCFC factory; finger-joint technique. By finger-jointing technique we were able to use little redundant pieces of short timber and make all necessary components for every possible piece of furniture.- Increase recovery rate of the sawmill; this was achieved after comprehensive field research based literature available on the internet. Eventually the recovery rate was increased by 27%, which means that 27% more m3 timber was produced per m3 log. - New products; the factory has a mass production line and aims to find customers who need simple furniture product in big quantities. Market research proved that especially doors, school desks and beds were relatively simple products which are on high demand.- Enhancing the relationship with local stakeholders; by improving the service in the companies' local hospital we generated a lot of goodwill under the employees, local villagers and government officials.
