    New Directions has been helping the people of Baltimore for more than 30 years. Our clients are job seekers, many of whom have one or more barriers to employment. The agency offers training and on-going support that enables them to find and retain successful careers.As a volunteer job search assistant, I help clients to create attractive resumes and cover letters and to search for and apply for jobs on line. I also help out in the classroom, helping with projects and solving the mysteries of the Microsoft apps. I meet a lot of great people, and I've learned a fair amount about PowerPoint that I didn't know before. I also help with computer maintenance by installing the operating system, applications, and security software on new machines.

Our goals are to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and to provide support for people who must isolate or quarantine because they have tested positive for the virus or because they have come in contact with someone who tested positive.

    I volunteer as a consumer complaint mediator in the Consumer Protection Division. I mediate complaints filed by Maryland residents against local and nationwide businesses. I also answer the helpline and instruct callers about how to file complaints or refer them to other resources. I found this opportunity on volunteermatch.org. This is a wonderful site for finding great ways to help your community and to expand your skills.

    I've joined 80,000 others in address canvassing in preparation for the 2020 census. We're going door to door to verify the addresses of about one third of U.S. households. It's physically and mentally exhausting--the hardest job I've ever had. It's like being a detective. I've met many great people, a few grumpy ones, and a couple of scary ones.
