I joined the research team, funded by the NERC grant “A Novel Framework for Predicting Emerging Chemical Stressor Impacts in Complex Ecosystems”, lead by Prof Guy Woodward and in collaboration with several groups at Imperial College (Bell, Pawar, Rosindell). The overarching goal was to develop a new means of assessing how chemical stressors affect freshwater ecosystems and how this will be modulated by climate change. My role was to support research staff investigating the impacts of chemicals on different components of freshwater ecosystems, from microbes to larger eukaryotes. The main focus of the role was to help run large scale microbial experiments in Dr Thomas Bell’s lab, provide support for field sampling of microbial and eukaryotic communities at field sites, and support the set up and running of mesocosm experiments at Silwood Park Campus. During the field work I was also responsible for coordinating groups of citizen scientists, who will help monitor sites of interest. I also assisted in the running and maintenance of the Class II microbiological lab, my main roles being:- Taught at field and lab practicals at the Mesocosm Summer School, run by AquaCosm- Organisation and conduction of field collection, and lab processing of samples including tea bags, leaf packs, algae biofilm, water, and sediment (continued involvement with the mesocosm project since 2016).- Growth of bacterial strains from frozen stocks, and measuring growth curves when subjected to increasing concentrations of chemicals (herbicides, fungicides, molluscicides, and antibiotics).- Organising field collection and lab processing of algae, leaf litter packs, tea bags, and cotton strips (continuing my work in the River Kennet from 2015)

      • Apr 2017 - Jun 2017

I assisted in nutrient distribution in Nash's Field, a long term grassland experiment at Silwood Park, with Dr Shorok, in the lab of Professor Tom Bell. Nash's Field consists of a nested design of several treatments used in agriculture to look into their effects on the ecosystem. One treatment is several nutrients (Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potassium, and Magnesium) which are often used in fertilizer, which are put onto the plots in 12 combinations. I assisted in the weighing out of each nutrient into the right combinations, and distributing them in the field for the ~200 plots.

I continued my work on the River Kennet during the summer of 2016, under Prof. Guy Woodward, processing leaf litter bag, and pigment analysis of chlorophyll (algae) samples from both natural and artificial substrates. Guy's group sampled the river every 2 months for 2 years after a pesticide spill in 2013, and I have been involved in sample processing during summer 2015, during my university third year project, and during my masters.I assisted in field work at Nash's Field, contributing to a long term study on terrestrial ecology conducted at Silwood Park Campus, Imperial College since 1992. The grassland experiment on Nash's Field contains plots with different combinations of pesticide and grazing treatments to look at the long term impacts of pesticide on terrestrial ecosystems. The most recent study, currentyly being conducted by Sam North and Shorok Mombrikotb, is looking at the impacts of long term pesticide treatments on terrestrial invertebrates. I assisted in the setting of pitfall traps, soil and plant sampling, terrestrial cotton strips (as a measure of microbial decomposition), and vortex suction sampling.I assisted in field work at the Broadstone Stream, which has been bio-monitored for the past 50 years. The recovery of the food web after acidification has been monitored by Imperial College and I have helped with the latest round of sampling, lead by Sam North, as part of Guy Woodward's group. I participated in depletion electro-fishing, and surber sampling.I supported field work and processed samples taken from the River Stour, where the effect of restoration in the form of large woody debris was being measured by Joseph Huddart, in Professor Guy Woodward's lab. Field work sampling included electro-fishing, benthic algae, leaf litter bags, and cotton strips. In the lab I sorted invertebrates to order level from leaf litter bags, and processed and weighed soil/sediment, and leaf litter samples.
