I'm now the early editor and world editor of the Asia Times online daily newspaper (asiatimes.com), working remotely from Louisiana and in the warmer months from my summer house in Japan. I've had several stints with Asia Times, which was about to launch as a startup print newspaper when I joined in 1995 as Tokyo bureau chief. After the paper went bankrupt in the 1997 Asian financial crisis, I stayed on and, as managing editor, helped create a replacement internet-only publication, staying with it until 2000. I rejoined in 2019. Before the pandemic, Asia Times desk colleagues and I worked face-to-face in what was then our editorial office in Bangkok. We communicate now via WhatsApp, email, telephone and Zoom.
