I was hired to be the Start Up Test Director for the TOKAMAK Fusion Test Reactor at the PPPL (Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory) in Princeton NJ. Different ? Here I among other things, also influenced design because the it had to be built and maintained as well as operated in a new environment. After that, another fission reactor Waterford Nuclear Power Station, Unit #3 followed by the death of the nuclear power industry in the United States.

Was hired by Northeast Nuclear Energy Company as a Plant Engineer on Unit 2 as S/U Engineers for Unit 3 had already been hired. Did a year as a "Damage Control Plug." On day 5 of reading Plant Procedures; they handed me Rx Engineer and Maintenance Supervisor Hats, NRC had just called and they wanted to start loading fuel bundles that night and I was in charge of the Graveyard 1st bundle to load. Then took away the RE Hat and worked the back twelve installing control rods and other core internals so the Maintenance Supervisor would do that and other plant work during the day. Then off to Post-Core Hot Functional Testing as a S/U Engineer for five weeks. I then got the RE graveyard Hat to take the Reactor critical which as timing had, I did it at night. Then got to keep the RE Hat to go into Rx Physics Test. Well if anyone recalls Dr Lord at Combustion Engineering, for 20 yrs he had been trying to get NRC permission to do an ALL Rod In Criticality on a power reactor. I did it on Sunday 0300; no way to way to shut down the reactor, other than emergency borate an 1100 MW commercial power reactor. From there it was off to Low Power Physics testing. I preferred graveyard to be on major events which made me the one to execute them. After that I took the Rx into the power range, made first steam, rolled the main turbine, made first electricity, first synchronized with the power grid, and achieved 100% output to the grid. Eventually it was time for the 100% Power Warranty Run. They then took away all my hats and since I had participated in every major event, I should help the Chief Start Up Engineer with the Test Report of everything to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Euche !! 'Exit Stage Right' where I took a job with a new company.

Took a picture with my Brownie Hawkeye at age 9 from the New London Connecticut Ferry. Ten years later that same boat, USS Piper, was the first submarine I was ever underway on. Later served on board Tusk, Cobbler, Sailfish, Grouper, ... for volunteer cruise to see if I would like submarines, Midshipman 1/c Cruise, two for submarine school, temporary duties etc. Qualified on Caiman (SS-323) in '68, Woodrow Wilson (SSBN-624) Shipyard crew, Woodrow Wilson Blue crew, Seawolf (SSN-575), George Washington Carver(SSBN-656) Gold crew as 2nd Officer, Senior Watch Officer, Navigator and Operations Officer and a Qualified Nuclear Engineer Officer by Admiral Rickover until limited from sea duty by disability in '75.1985 -- 2005 Systems Engineer, Test EngineerNaval Air Development Center -->> Naval Air Warfare Center, Aircraft Division, Warminster -->> NRad Division, NOSC Warminster PA then San Diego CA [BRAC 1995] -->> NRad SPAWAR SYSTEM Center, San Diego -->> 1996 - 2005 FAT MAN Designed, set up and supervised the FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) program for NAVSSI at three civilian companies.
