Well, perhaps I haven't really worked in the wine trade since the repeal of prohibition, but I have taken meetings with Ab Simon and Robert Chadderdon, and lunch with Harry Waugh and Charles F. Shaw, although not on the same day.I have also taken consulting assignments from wineries, importers, retailers and restaurateurs that you know, including the odd advertising agency, airline and such. I started in the very early '80's when a few brave souls in Manhattan were either brilliant or crazy enough to hire me to troubleshoot their business after hearing my pitch. I haven't had to look back. I spent much of the '90's traveling coast to coast teaching others in the Trade to correctly pronounce Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle, Roter Veltliner and Recoltant Champagne before such things were common parlance. I remember a time when the syllable "som" was most frequently followed by "nambulist". I knew the first crop of Americans that now have initials like MS and MW after their names. Damn, I'm old. My interest in the aesthetics of wine required that I school myself in the business of wine, a Faustian bargain that has allowed me to remain independent while also allowing my clients to keep more of the money they work so hard to earn. There is a small but essential overlap on the Venn diagram where art and commerce dwell in harmony, and I make it my professional business to take my clients there.I understand sourcing, selecting, importing, marketing, brokering, training, buying and selling. There's a lot more I could tell you, but I already see your eyes glazing over. Thanks for even reading this far...
