The Volunteer School in Buryatia (http://buryatiaschool.org/) is an independent educational project that welcomes volunteers from all over the world to teach at the rural schools in Russian Siberia. Buryatia Summer School promotes educational values, sharing of knowledge and skills, and cultural exchange. It gives a unique opportunity to live simple life in an incredibly beautiful scenery, eat natural food, ride a horse as a mean of transport, and learn about Buryat and Russian cultures.♦ Founded a summer school for 60 students in the rural areas of Siberia and developed the school’s academic programs. ♦ Generated international awareness for the school and recruited volunteers from the US, Russia, Austria, Germany, Malaysia, Poland, Portugal, and Switzerland. ♦ Led languages classes, supervised other teachers, and managed the program’s website. The project scaled from two schools in 2009 to twelve school network in 2013. The Volunteer School has stopped accepting volunteers momentarily due to legal changes of the region's status: due to proximity to its border with Mongolia (25 km), the area was declared border-controlled zone, and the outsiders are no longer allowed to enter the area without a permission from authorities.

"I've been living in the same place, country and city all my life. What can I really do outside of my comfort zone? Can I find a job in another country and work in a different language? Can I survive in an unfamiliar environment, or will I go back home in a month?" - I thought to myself leaving Moscow with a one-way ticket. I felt impatient to see and explore the world, so I left the next day after the graduation ceremony from the Lomonosov Moscow State University. I traveled to Berlin for a social projects management workshop, then to Buryatia (a region in Russian Siberia) where I founded a summer school for middle and high school students from several villages. I taught at a rural school in a village with a population of 500 people. I continued my travels to Mongolia, China, Viet Nam, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos... I wandered through these countries I've never been before, by myself at the age of 22, spending money that I earned and saved specifically for this trip while I was a student. I then managed to find a job teaching Russian at a college in Malaysia. Two people (incl. me) were teaching Russian in all of Kuala Lumpur. I think I was very lucky to get a position in that 0.000001% of the job market! The experience of encountering so many different people and cultures immensely helped my personal and professional development teaching me to be flexible, creative and open-minded. I'm proud of successfully adapting to people and lifestyles of places so different from each other such as Russia, Malaysia and the United States. My ancestors were nomads, and it is their spirit of courage, wander and curiosity that drives me to continue my learning and everyday explorations of people, cultures and technologies.
