Prior to joining the Health service all those years ago I trained in Architects offices for over seven years working on several prestigious schemes at the time including ICI, Washington New Town development and three of the original Metro stations within the Newcastle area. Try doing a section through the staircases at Monument without the aid of CAD! I joined the Architects dept. at Regional headquarters in 1976 and moved to Freeman hospital two years later. Carried out the normal duties of a maintenance officer, Programing works, forward planning and working with a full maintenance team. I moved between hospitals for various areas of experience and returned to the Fold (Freeman) where a new works team was established and stayed ever since. Why? virtually every day is different the works are continuous as you would expect in such a large Trust and even at my age I still enjoy it. Following the development of the New Works team, where the duties included designing, planning, hiring of relevant trades for the individual schemes the PFI development was taking place at the RVI and so the team moved there temporarily to progress with enabling works to allow the development on site which can be seen today from Victoria Road - A far cry from the Victorian buildings which once stood there providing the best of Health care known at that time. Now we are in a new era providing very much more advanced care of which I am very proud to have played a small part in the Trust's development of these fine buildings
