Anthony J. Buffa is a distinguished professor emeritus of physics at Cal Poly State University, with expertise in textbook authoring, experimental nuclear physics, and environmental radiation monitoring. He has taught and conducted research in various institutions, including Cal Poly, College of William and Mary, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Experience

  • Cal Poly State University
    • San Luis Obispo, CA
    • Professor of Physics (Emeritus)
      • Jan 1970 - Present
      • San Luis Obispo, CA

Teaching and research in Physics. I officially retired in 2005. In addition to working on textbook writing and consulting, I still teach occasionally (part-time) as needed.

  • Radioanalytical Laboratory at Cal Poly
    • Physics Department, Cal Poly St. University, San Luis Obispo, CA
    • Research Associate Professor
      • Jun 1981 - Jun 1996
      • Physics Department, Cal Poly St. University, San Luis Obispo, CA

I was one of three physics department faculty doing intensive environmental radiation monitoring in San Luis Obispo county in relation to the startup and operation of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. The project was funded by PG&E. Primarily we used high resolution Ge(Li) gamma detectors to analyze water, vegetables, air, milk, etc. Radiation dosimeters and solid state beta detectors were also employed. Our laboratory was one of the first on the west coast to pick up Chernobyl fragments.

  • College of William and Mary
    • Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF)
    • Visiting Research Professor
      • Jul 1981 - Jul 1981
      • Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF)

I participated in experimental medium energy nuclear physics research utilizing the pion beam at LAMPF, summer 1981, with a group from William and Mary.

  • College of William and Mary
    • Physics Department, Williamsburg, VA
    • Visiting Research Professor
      • Jun 1971 - Sep 1971
      • Physics Department, Williamsburg, VA

Research in medium-energy experimental nuclear physics at SREL synchrocyclotron in Newport News, VA. Summer of 1971 and summer of 1972.

    • Graduate Research/Teaching Assistant
      • Sep 1964 - Dec 1969

During graduate school I taught as well as my thesis research in experimental low energy nuclear structure physics. My thesis experiment used the He-3 beam at the University of Illinois cyclotron laboratory to investigate low Z element nuclear structure.
