I was Head of Department for 4 years until September 2015 since which I have been on sabbatical. Whilst my metier has been in dance and theatre, I am an interdisciplinarian working often at the edges of my own discipline, intersecting with e.g. medicine. I am the Director of the international laboratory MA in Performance Making and co-director of the Centre of the Body. I am the founder, curator and chair of the public Performance Research Forum that brings international artists to present their work. I sit on several College committees and have been active more recently in articulating Practice as Research in a specific working group. I work for College on international projects including Lasalle, Singapore. I supervise PhDs, mostly in topics concerning the body, intercultural practice and feminism. I am also a seasoned External Examiner at UG and PG level and have served on validating committees in the UK and abroad. My research is in both publication and practice. See separate entry. Following working on the validation committee to set up the new BA in Performance, I was invited to apply to join full time faculty. During this time, I taught, directed productions and ran a public events series that I then imported to Goldsmiths. I led this company for 5 years, with a mission to assume that New Writing = New Theatre. To this end I developed outstanding production teams including Sally Jacobs (scenographer), Stephen Warbeck (Oscar-winning composer), Graeme Miller (composer) and Ace MacCarron (lighting designer). Writers I produced included Stephen Jeffries, Lavinia Murray, Nigel Gearing, Suzy Gilmour, Michel Azama and Anna Reynolds. I moved the company's productions from exclusively small scale to middle scale venues, co-producing with e.g. Plymouth Theatre Royal, Salisbury Playhouse, the Traverse Edinburg and Derby Playhouse, developing also special relationships with the Lyric Hammersmith and Riverside Studios in London. I created "Pre-Text Labs", introducing writers to collaborate with Live Artists and composers. I introduced the idea of writers working site-responsively and site-specifically, commissioning Geraldine Pilgrim. I pioneered international co-production for the company, notably a British Council Paris initiative that culminated in the production of Down and Out in Paris and London. This adaptation by Nigel Gearing had a bi-lingual cast, up to 100 extras, inaugurated a disused abattoir in Chalon-sur-Saone and performed alongside Howard Barker's Wrestling School at the Theatre de Gennevilliers in Paris. Other international stagings included Amsterdam, Kiev and cities in the Ukraine, and Lille. During this time I was Consultant for 3 years at the Comedie de Caen. I developed the company's existing New Writing workshops into The School Without Walls. I secured the company's annual budget from the Arts Council with a 15% increase in its annual revenue, turning over in excess of £350,000 PA at the time. During my directorship the Arts Council nominated the company as "key organisation" nationally. My own piece, AUGUSTINE (Big Hysteria), received a Time Out award for Writing and Direction and was nominated for the LWT Plays on Stage award. Show less

This was a pioneering feminist Grotowski-inspired dance theatre company that built a reputation in the UK and Europe for our "painterly" political devised works. The company was founded with Suzy Gilmour and collaborators included Kate Owen, Rick Fisher, Craig Givens, Mine Kaylan, Giovanna Rogante, Stephanie Pugsley, Sylvia Hallett, Sianed Jones, Simon Cassell, Andrjej Borkowski and Phillip Wood. Projects were mostly devised with the exception of Clam by Deborah Levy, commissioned by the Ovalhouse Theatre. Our London base moved from the Ovalhouse to the ICA and our touring circuit included Holland, Switzerland, Germany and Italy.
