Professional Photographer and Digital Artist

I am a multi-disciplinary artist with a keen interest in the intersection of Art and Technology. My freelance practice focuses primarily on professional photography, image manipulation and reproduction for the arts and culture sector. However, my broader practice has included a wide range of projects in art direction, videography, computer-aided design and manufacturing, graphic design, Illustration and electronic art. Previous clients include:- Art Basel, Switzerland,- Gurushots, Tel Aviv,- A4 Arts Foundation,- Handspring Puppet Company,- Film ART,- Art Week Cape Town,- Goodman Gallery and other local art galleries,- Centre for Curating the Archive.

Lecturer: Digital Art and Curatorship

Lecturing studio-based art projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate level across various disciplinary sections of Michaelis, including new media, printmaking, sculpture, videography and curatorship. All projects aim to impart specific technical skills (in traditional media, digital software or both) while developing conceptual thinking, critical skills and creativity. Specific teaching roles have included digital software trainer, co-lecturer, course convenor and academic supervisor. Key duties include developing project briefs, lesson planning, utilizing UCT's online learning platform (Vula) lecturing and training, ongoing constructive feedback, developing formative assessments, and presenting student work to staff for evaluation. In 2018 I served as 1-year sabbatical replacement for Berni Searle, Director of Michaelis School of Fine Art, in her teaching duties. Courses convened or co-taught include:CAD/CAM | with Adobe Illustrator and Autodesk Fusion 360,Virtual Curatorship | with Adobe Photoshop, Augmented Reality,Videography | with Adobe Premiere,Publication Design | with Adobe InDesign,Digital Printmaking | Adobe Photoshop and laser engraving on a Trotec Speedy 3000,Digital Animation | with Adobe After Effects,Street Art | Adobe Illustrator and stencil making,Sound Art | with Audacity,Physical Computing | on the Arduino platform with C++,Augmented Reality | with Layar/Blippar,Typography Design | with Font Studio,Stopframe Animation | Claymation, set building and zoetrope production.

Supervisor: Digital Fabrication Unit

Supervisor and primary operator in Michaelis’ Digital Fabrication Unit which houses a Trotec Speedy 300 Laser Engraver, Multicam 3000 CNC Router and Multicam 3000 CNC Plasma Sheet Metal Cutter. Duties include software and hardware training for staff and student operators, developing new policies regarding workshop usage and management, researching and implementing best practices in safety and efficiency, advising department head on equipment procurement, and general operating of the laser cutter and CNC router.

Digital Laser Machine Operator

One of four workshop facilitators in charge of operating Michaelis’ laser engraving machine for staff and students. Duties include scheduling appointments, reviewing user’s design files, advising users on appropriate materials, operating the high-intensity laser machine in order to cut and engrave these materials.

Lecturer: Desktop Publishing

Lecturing in digital desktop publishing, editorial design and print production, with a theoretical component and a practical component focused on Adobe InDesign. Duties included developing course content, lesson planning, teaching in desktop publishing theory, training in Adobe InDesign, working with the college's online learning platform (Blackboard), monitoring at-risk students, developing formative and summative assessments, and evaluating students work. All of this was based on IIE-accredited resources, teaching criteria and expected outcomes.

Lessons were taught in person aided by the school's online learning platform (Google Classroom), focusing primarily on software training in Adobe Photoshop, incorporating aspects of cell phone photography, digital photo retouching, image manipulation and Art Theory.

Development content and assessments for, as well as lecturing in a 3-week intensive undergraduate project focusing on book cover design. The project included a theoretical component covering design principles, typography and layout, and a practical component including software training in Adobe Photoshop and the hands-on use flat-bed scanning for digital imaging, image manipulation and print production.

A wide scope of duties for A4, a free to the public, not-for-profit project space dedicated to supporting contemporary art in Southern Africa. Duties included research into contemporary art and the arts and culture sector, conceptualising the role and position of A4 within that sector, working with visiting artists and curators in aid of their projects, drawing up contracts and other basic operations toward establishing the foundation.
